Financial Incentives and Payments for Apprentices and Trainees | Sarina Russo

Payments for Apprentices & Trainees

An apprenticeship or traineeship is a great way to earn while you learn! In addition to any wage your employer pays, there are a number of financial incentives and allowances for apprentices and trainees.

Ready to offset your expenses? We’re here to support you!

Filling the skills shortage gaps

The Additional Identified Skills Shortage (AISS) incentive provides payments for apprentices, and their employers, in the following occupations which have been identified as experiencing a shortage of skilled workers:

  • Carpenters and Joiners
  • Plasterers
  • Plumbers
  • Bakers and Pastry Cooks
  • Hairdressers
  • Vehicle Painters
  • Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanics
  • Wall and Floor Tilers
  • Bricklayers and Stonemasons
  • Arborists

A payment of $1,000 will be made to eligible apprentices 12 months after starting their apprenticeship, with an addition $1,000 paid on completion of the apprenticeship.

This scheme is designed to address a genuine skills shortage.

Apprentices who undertake a Certificate III or IV level qualification in one of the identified occupations from 1 July 2019, is eligible for AISS payments. To be eligible for this payment, you must remain with the same employer (or host employer) that you started your apprenticeship with.
