A group of Benalla students got a taste for the hospitality industry thanks to a local collaboration facilitated by Tomorrow Today.
Five Year 10 students completed their Certificate III in Hospitality (Kitchen Operations), their Food Handler’s Certificate and Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate.
“We are thrilled that this opportunity was made available locally for our young people”, said Rosie Koop, Executive Officer at Tomorrow Today. “The students have gained great hands-on experience in kitchens, as well as learning the theory behind food preparation and hygiene.”
Ms Koop said the school-based apprenticeship initiative grew out of a conversation with Ella Goose Restaurant owner, Jillian Merkel in collaboration with Craig Robinson, a Box Hill Institute Culinary Arts and Hospitality Trainer. Mr Robinson then approached Benalla P-12 College about offering the training to their students. Tomorrow Today, NE Tracks LLEN and Sarina Russo Apprenticeships met with owners of local hospitality venues to discuss the benefits of employing a school-based apprentice. “Many of the businesses were surprised to find out there is significant government financial support to help cover the apprentice’s wages, training and supervision costs.”
Ms Koop acknowledged the fantastic contributions of Ella Goose, Rustik Cafe and Foodstore, The Bootmaker’s Shop, Charcoal Chicken and the Benalla Bowls Club for supporting the five graduates.
