About Australian apprenticeships and traineeships

HOW IT WORKS

Apprenticeships and traineeships combine training with working and give you the opportunity to earn income while gaining the skills and qualifications for your future. You’ll receive on-the-job training while learning valuable skills both at work and under the guidance of a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

Throughout your apprenticeship or traineeship, you’ll work towards the completion of a nationally recognised qualification that will open career pathways to you.

What’s the difference between an apprenticeship and a traineeship?

DIFFERENCES

Apprenticeships teach skills in trades such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical, building and construction, etc. It takes approximately 3-4 years to complete a full time apprenticeship and become a qualified tradesperson.

Traineeships are shorter and generally take 1-2 years to complete full time. Traineeships offer a broad range of vocational and occupational choices that can include Information Technology, Children’s Services, Business Administration, Aged Care or Hospitality. On completion, you will receive a national recognised qualification in your chosen area.

Most importantly, no matter what career path you choose to take, you are likely to find an apprenticeship or traineeship that matches your career goals.

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships

SCHOOL AGED

If you’re a high school student, keen to kickstart your career, you might want to explore an apprenticeship or traineeship as part of your studies.

Students aged 15 years of age or older are eligible to apply for school-based apprenticeships and traineeships.  Part of your training will need to be undertaken during your school timetable, and you’ll need to gain approval from your school. This learning can contribute toward your high school certificate or Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

You should also be aware that school-based apprenticeships and traineeships are part-time, with many apprentices and trainees continuing on a full-time contract with their employers after leaving school.

For school leavers under 21 years old

SCHOOL LEAVERS

If you’ve left school or are simply considering building your career in a specific field, an apprenticeship or traineeship could be the perfect way to kick-start your career. You’ll earn an income while working towards a nationally recognised qualification and developing a skill-set that can set you up for life. These apprenticeships are generally full-time but can be part-time depending on the role.

Adult apprentices and trainees more than 21 years old

ADULT APPRENTICESHIPS

Are you aged 21 years or over and considering starting an apprenticeship or traineeship? ,You’re not alone!

You might want to formalise your experience with an apprenticeship or traineeship, or change career completely and enter a new industry. If you have prior experience, you may be able to fast-track your qualification through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) with the support of a registered training organisation (RTO).

Pay rates are usually higher than junior apprentices, and incentives may be available to support you during the qualification. Adult apprenticeships for those aged 45 years or over can also be defined as mature aged apprenticeships. These can attract additional incentives for employers, who are increasingly offering adult apprenticeships.
